The Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa government is planning to expand Peshawar’s Bus Rapid Transit system with 50 additional buses.
The new buses will help extend BRT services to areas beyond the existing route. The government has allocated Rs. 4.989 billion for the purchase.
Officials said the additional buses will be 12 metres long and battery-electric. They will operate across five proposed BRT extension routes.
Five New Routes Planned for Peshawar BRT
The proposed expansion will connect several areas through new BRT routes. These routes will extend public transport access across different parts of the city.
The five proposed routes include Mall of Hayatabad to Jamrud. Another route will connect Pashtakhara to Bara Bazaar through Bara Road.
The expansion will also cover the Gulbahar to Dabgari Garden route. Meanwhile, another proposed route will run from Shah Alam Bridge to Naguman.
The fifth route involves an extension of the existing Kohat Adda route.
Together, these routes are expected to broaden the reach of the Peshawar BRT system. Moreover, the additional buses will support operations across the proposed extensions.
More Equipment to Support New Buses
The government will also procure supporting equipment for the additional buses. This includes 15 chargers for the battery-electric fleet.
In addition, the procurement plan covers Intelligent Transport System equipment. Other essential accessories will also be purchased as part of the expansion.
The additional infrastructure will support the operation of the new electric buses. Therefore, the expansion involves more than simply increasing the size of the fleet.
52 Buses Already Purchased
The government has already purchased 52 buses for the BRT expansion. So far, 25 of these buses have arrived in Peshawar.
The remaining 27 buses are expected to arrive soon. As a result, the city is already preparing for a larger BRT operation.
Once the additional 50 buses are purchased, the total Peshawar BRT fleet will reach 346 buses.
The expansion will therefore significantly increase the number of buses available for BRT operations. At the same time, the five proposed routes will extend the system into additional areas.
