US State Department Backs Pakistan’s Anti-Terrorism Efforts in Operation Azm-e-Istehkam

Operation Azm-e-Istehkam

WASHINGTON: The United States has expressed its support for Pakistan’s recent anti-terrorism efforts following the launch of Operation Azm-e-Istehkam, emphasizing collaboration on security issues aimed at safeguarding citizens and promoting rule of law.

State Department Spokesperson Matthew Miller affirmed Washington’s endorsement during a press briefing, highlighting ongoing partnerships in counterterrorism capacity-building and military engagements with Pakistan.

Miller underscored the shared interest between the US and Pakistan in combating regional security threats, acknowledging Pakistan’s significant challenges with terrorism and the collective approach adopted in the new counter-terrorism initiative.

Operation Azm-e-Istehkam, approved with consensus among provinces and territories, focuses on intelligence-driven operations rather than large-scale military actions, aiming to enhance safety while minimizing disruption to civilian life.

However, the operation has sparked concerns from opposition parties like Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), Jamiat-e-Ulema Islam Fazl (JUI-F), and Awami National Party (ANP), who advocate for parliamentary oversight and transparency in decision-making regarding such security measures.

Beyond counterterrorism efforts, Miller addressed recent incidents of mob violence in Pakistan, condemning religiously motivated violence and stressing the US opposition to blasphemy laws worldwide, including in Pakistan.

He reiterated the US stance on human rights, urging Pakistani authorities to uphold freedoms of religion, expression, association, and peaceful assembly.

Regarding Pakistan’s designation as a “Country of Particular Concern” for religious freedom, Miller affirmed ongoing diplomatic engagements with Pakistani counterparts to address human rights issues comprehensively.

He noted that these discussions are part of broader efforts reflected in the State Department’s reports on International Religious Freedom and Human Rights Practices.

In conclusion, Miller emphasized the importance of respecting human rights as integral to US-Pakistan relations, pledging continued dialogue and cooperation to promote stability and safeguard fundamental freedoms in Pakistan and the region.
