The United Nations Mission in Afghanistan (UNAMA) presented its quarterly report to the UN Security Council, highlighting ongoing human rights violations since the Taliban assumed power in 2021. Roza Isakovna Otunbayeva, head of UNAMA, led the presentation, underscoring global apprehensions about the situation.
Accompanying Otunbayeva were representatives from the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs and an Afghan civil society activist. During the session, the Islamic Emirate requested that UNAMA accurately portray Afghanistan’s realities in its reports.
Political analysts and advocates for women’s rights urged the international community to address the violations, particularly concerning women in Afghanistan. They called for a shift in global policies towards Afghanistan, advocating peaceful and constructive engagement with the Afghan government.
In a meeting with the Permanent Representative of the United Arab Emirates to the United Nations, Otunbayeva acknowledged UNAMA’s efforts to foster a prosperous future for Afghanistan, with a focus on women’s issues.
UNAMA’s inaugural quarterly report in May 2024 reiterated concerns about the persistent human rights situation in Afghanistan. The international community remains vigilant, urging concrete actions to address the ongoing violations.
