Mukhtar Ansari, Prominent Indian Politician, Dies in Jail; Foul Play Suspected

Renowned Indian politician Mukhtar Ansari passed away in jail after suffering a heart attack in Uttar Pradesh’s Banda district, sparking speculation about potential poisoning.

Ansari’s sudden deterioration in health after iftar prompted doctors to be summoned to the jail, where he was subsequently rushed to Rani Durgavati Medical College. Despite efforts to treat him, Ansari succumbed to his condition.

Following his death, heightened security measures were implemented across various cities amid concerns of potential mass protests. Ansari’s family alleged foul play, leading to an ordered investigation into his demise.

Earlier in March, Ansari had complained of abdominal pain and was diagnosed with a urinary tract infection after being hospitalized for approximately 14 hours. Subsequently, he was advised surgery and moved to the Intensive Care Unit (ICU).

His son, Umar Ansari, claimed that his father had been poisoned through his food, echoing earlier assertions made by Ansari himself in a Barabanki Court.

In response to security concerns, police officials were deployed to areas including Mau, Gazipur, and Banda, with Section 144 of the Code of Criminal Procedure (CrPC) enforced. The Director General of Police issued orders to prohibit large gatherings across Uttar Pradesh.

Condolences poured in from political figures, including the Samajwadi Party (SP), Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) supremo Mayawati, and Indian politician Tejashwi Yadav, who emphasized the need for a thorough investigation into Ansari’s death.

Congress leader Surendra Rajput raised questions about the Uttar Pradesh government’s handling of the situation and demanded a comprehensive probe.

Mukhtar Ansari, a former five-time MLA from the Mau Sadar seat, had been incarcerated since 2005 due to approximately 60 pending criminal cases against him. He was transferred to Banda jail in April 2021 after serving time in Punjab. Subsequently, he faced sentencing in eight cases by different courts in Uttar Pradesh, earning him a spot on the UP police’s list of 66 gangsters in 2023.
