Is Elon Musk launching Starlink in Pakistan?

Starlink, which is owned by Elon Musk‘s SpaceX, has applied to do business in Pakistan.

However, the Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA), the country’s telecommunications regulatory authority, and other stakeholders have voiced concerns about the idea.

According to the PTA:

A security clearance is required for authorisation to use satellite internet.

Starlink, which provides internet connectivity through satellite in numerous countries, submitted a technical and commercial plan with the PTA for operations in Pakistan, with plans to utilise satellite-to-satellite laser technology.

However,

A number of stakeholders, including the Space and Upper Atmosphere Research Commission (SUPARCO) and other organisations, have expressed concerns about data hosting outside of Pakistan and the security risks connected with satellite internet.

In response to these concerns, the PTA has made satellite internet certification conditional on security clearance.

The move is being taken as Pakistan’s government tightens regulations for internet and technology companies doing business in the country.

As the country’s telecommunications infrastructure continues to fail:

The introduction of satellite internet may give much-needed relief to many who are frustrated by slow and intermittent connections.
