Hollywood writers strike over Pay and Fear AI Threat

Studios like Netflix and Disney’s refusal to rule out artificial intelligence eventually replacing human writers has fueled anger and fear on the picket lines of the Hollywood writers’ strike, which was initiated this week over pay.

Awareness of AI programmes like ChatGPT has grown in a number of industries as a result of their rapidly improving mimicry of human speech.

In order to explore potential threats, the White House recently called Big Tech to a meeting.

The Writers Guild of America requested legally enforceable agreements to govern the use of AI during the weeks-long negotiations with studios and streamers, which ended on Monday.

The Writers Guild of America (WGA) proposed measures to prevent the categorization of AI-written content as “literary” or “source” material, which determines the eligibility for royalties. ‘

However, the studios rejected these suggestions and proposed to hold a yearly meeting to “discuss technological advancements” instead.

Work Replaced by Computers

Few television and film writers on the picket lines think that computers could take over their jobs.

The belief of studios and streamers that AI can perform their duties, however, has dealt them a devastating blow.

They worry that Hollywood executives may try to cut expenses even more by utilising computers to produce their next big hit shows, following in the footsteps of Silicon Valley businesses that have already upended many established conventions in the industry, such as long-term contracts for writers.

Authors’ worries have further increased as a result of remarks made by prominent Hollywood executives at this week’s Milken Institute Global Conference in Beverly Hills. Todd Lieberman, a film producer, stated:

“In the next three years, you’re going to see a movie that AI wrote..made a good one.”

Fox Entertainment CEO Rob Wade added, “Not just scripts. Editing, all of it…storyboarding a movie, anything.” He went on to say that AI will be able to do absolutely everything within 10 years.

The studios, on the other hand, have provided a more nuanced account of how the negotiations with the Writers Guild of America broke down.

A briefing letter from the studios claims that authors are willing to utilise AI “as part of their creative process” and do not want to restrict it as long as it does not affect their income.

The studios have agreed to talk more about this issue in the future.

Hollywood- Leila Cohan, a 39-year-old writer

The hit Netflix series Bridgerton’s writer Leila Cohan thinks AI is mainly helpful for “busy work” like coming up with names for characters. She envisions a potentially terrifying world in which companies use AI to produce subpar first draughts before hiring authors to revise them. She believes it is best to handle this matter right away.
