The arrest of New Delhi’s Chief Minister, Arvind Kejriwal, marked an unprecedented moment in India’s political landscape. He became the first sitting chief minister in the country’s history to face such legal action. In a significant move, the Enforcement Directorate (ED) dispatched a 12-member team to arrest CM Kejriwal at his residence in North Delhi’s Civil Lines during the evening hours.
Earlier today, the Delhi High Court denied protection from coercive action to Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal in the excise policy case. As a result, the ED team arrived at his residence and started questioning him. This eventually led to his arrest as per reports.
Reacting to the news, Delhi Education Minister Atishi Marlena Singh informed reporters of the arrest, underscoring the gravity of the situation as it unfolded.
The arrest stems from allegations surrounding a liquor policy introduced by the Delhi government in 2022, which saw a shift in control over the sale of liquor in the capital to private retailers, purportedly resulting in unfair advantages. Eventually, the policy was retracted.
In a press statement, the ED branded Mr. Kejriwal as a “conspirator” in the case, pointing to his alleged involvement in orchestrating the controversial policy.
According to the allegations, Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS) leader K Kavitha was purportedly involved in collusion with Kejriwal, along with AAP leaders Manish Sisodia and Sanjay Singh, in formulating the now-defunct liquor policy. The alleged conspiracy aimed to devise a policy beneficial to a liquor lobby from southern India, which the ED has referred to as the “South Lobby.”
This arrest has sent shockwaves through the political landscape, sparking debates and discussions about the implications for governance and accountability in the country.
