Sindh Chief Minister Approves Rs5.5 Billion Smart Safe City Project for Karachi

KARACHI: The Sindh Police Department and NRTC have reached an agreement for the implementation of the Smart Safe City project in the red zone of Karachi. This significant agreement has received approval from Sindh Chief Minister Syed Murad Ali Shah.

The agreement, amounting to Rs5.5 billion, was greenlit during a meeting convened at the CM House, with key stakeholders including Home Minister Zia Lanjar, Mayor Karachi Murtaza Wahab, Chief Secretary Asif Hyder Shah, and other high-ranking officials in attendance.

The Smart Safe City project aims to enhance security and surveillance capabilities by installing 1300 CCTV cameras equipped with Facial Recognition (FR) and Automatic Number Plate Recognition (ANPR) technology across 300 sites in the Red Zone and Airport Corridor. These cameras, backed by solar-powered systems ensuring an eight-hour backup, will be seamlessly integrated into the Command and Control Center (C&CC) at the Central Police Office, with plans for a permanent C&CC establishment at the Karachi Police Office.

The project’s advanced features include facial recognition and number plate recognition systems, facilitating efficient monitoring of hospitals for criminal activity, real-time tracking of suspects, comprehensive database management, and integration with national and criminal databases.

Expressing his satisfaction with the project’s progress, Chief Minister Syed Murad Ali Shah emphasized the urgency of its implementation to bolster public safety and security. He urged NRTC to expedite the first phase, targeting completion within one and a half years, aligning with the city’s growing population and the imperative need for effective crime control and disaster management measures.

This innovative safety system, driven by Artificial Intelligence and digital transformation, underscores the government’s commitment to leveraging technology for proactive crime prevention, efficient incident response, and seamless traffic management. Chief Minister Murad Ali Shah hailed the initiation of the project’s first phase as a significant milestone, heralding improved safety and security for the residents of Karachi.
