Artificial Intelligence Helps Police in Solving Blind Murder Case

Murder Case

In a pioneering move, Delhi Police leveraged artificial intelligence (AI) to reconstruct the face of an unidentified man discovered near a flyover. Posters featuring the AI-generated image were instrumental in not only identifying the victim but also leading to the apprehension of the culprits, according to law enforcement authorities.

The discovery of the body near the Geeta Colony flyover on January 10 prompted an immediate investigative response, with no identification documents found in the victim’s possession. The case was initially treated as a blind murder, and a dedicated team of 30 police personnel was assigned to address the challenge of establishing the victim’s identity.

Utilizing AI technology, the police digitally reconstructed the victim’s face with open eyes, altering the background for better clarity. The modified image was uploaded to the Crime and Criminal Tracking Network (CCTN) website, connecting police across eight different states. Additionally, over 400 posters were strategically distributed in the national capital, and digital sharing took place via WhatsApp groups until January 12.

The breakthrough in the case occurred when an individual, after seeing a poster outside a police station, identified the victim as his brother, Hitendra. Further investigation revealed that Hitendra had been involved in a dispute with two individuals over a woman approximately two months prior. On January 9, the accused parties, allegedly in an inebriated condition, encountered Hitendra, resulting in his strangulation.

Police authorities have confirmed the apprehension of four individuals, including a woman and a cab driver, in connection with the case. The successful integration of AI technology in this investigation showcases its potential in solving complex cases and enhancing law enforcement efforts.
