More than 1,400 Pakistani medical graduates have secured residency placements in the United States for 2026. The achievement marks a significant milestone for Pakistan’s medical education sector. Moreover, it reflects the growing success of Pakistani doctors in securing postgraduate clinical training opportunities abroad.
According to the Pakistan Medical and Dental Council (PMDC), over 1,400 graduates earned placements in US residency programmes this year. The council described the outcome as a major accomplishment for Pakistan’s healthcare education system.
PMDC Hails the Achievement
PMDC President congratulated the successful graduates on reaching this important milestone.
He said their success reflected the combined efforts of medical students, teachers, educational institutions, and regulatory authorities working to strengthen medical education standards across Pakistan.
Furthermore, the council stated that the latest results demonstrate Pakistani medical graduates can compete successfully in international licensing examinations and residency pathways.
Significant Increase Compared to Last Year
The latest figures show a noticeable improvement over 2025.
Last year, the PMDC reported that 1,061 Pakistani doctors secured residency placements in the United States. This year’s total has increased by at least 339 placements.
The rise highlights the growing presence of Pakistani graduates in competitive international medical training programmes. As a result, the country’s medical graduates continue to gain recognition for their academic preparation and professional capabilities.
What Is a US Medical Residency?
A medical residency is supervised postgraduate clinical training that doctors complete after earning their medical degree.
During residency, doctors receive specialised training in their chosen fields. These fields commonly include internal medicine, paediatrics, family medicine, surgery, and psychiatry.
Before applying for residency positions in the United States, candidates must complete the required examinations and certification process. Afterwards, they participate in the National Resident Matching Program, which places applicants into accredited residency programmes.
International Medical Graduates Continue to Play a Key Role
International medical graduates maintained a strong presence in the 2026 residency match.
Official US figures show that 9,682 international medical graduates matched into first-year residency positions this year.
Among them, 2,949 were US citizens who completed their medical education abroad. Meanwhile, 6,733 were non-US citizen international medical graduates.
Overall, 38,354 applicants secured first-year residency positions during the 2026 Main Residency Match.
In total, US residency programmes offered more than 44,000 training positions across different medical specialties.
Growing Recognition for Pakistani Medical Graduates
The latest residency placements highlight the increasing international competitiveness of Pakistani medical graduates.
Moreover, the steady rise in successful placements reflects continued efforts to improve medical education standards in Pakistan. It also demonstrates that Pakistani doctors remain capable of meeting the demanding requirements of international residency programmes.
With more than 1,400 graduates securing placements this year, Pakistan has recorded another encouraging achievement in the field of medical education and postgraduate clinical training.
