The ruling Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) and its main coalition partner, the Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP), have reviewed the situation in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa following the imposition of emergency and governor’s rule.
Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif convened the meeting on Tuesday. PPP Chairman Bilawal Bhutto-Zardari attended alongside senior party leaders and other government officials.
The discussions also covered the proposed Parliamentary Committee on Electoral Reforms.
Senior Leaders Attend Consultative Meeting
The PPP delegation included Senate Chairman Yousuf Raza Gilani, Senator Sherry Rehman and former prime minister Raja Pervez Ashraf.
KP Governor Faisal Karim Kundi and Balochistan Chief Minister Sarfraz Bugti also attended the meeting. Several federal cabinet members and senior officials were present.
During the discussions, Governor Kundi briefed the prime minister on developments in KP, particularly administrative measures and the security situation.
Sarfraz Bugti also shared an update on security conditions in Balochistan.
Electoral Reforms Committee Also Discussed
The proposed Parliamentary Committee on Electoral Reforms was another major topic.
Prime Minister Shehbaz expressed the desire to establish the committee without further delay.
According to a source familiar with the meeting, Bilawal informed the prime minister that the PPP would soon submit its nominees to National Assembly Speaker Sardar Ayaz Sadiq.
The committee is expected to provide a parliamentary platform for discussions on electoral reforms.
PM Holds Separate Meeting With Army Chief
Meanwhile, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif held a separate meeting with Chief of Defence Forces Field Marshal Asim Munir.
A source in the Prime Minister’s Office said they discussed the overall situation in the country.
The latest consultations come after the federal government imposed emergency and governor’s rule in KP on October 11. The measures followed growing tensions between the Centre and the former provincial administration over security and counterterrorism policies.
