Hackers allegedly tampered with refrigeration systems at France’s blood establishment, raising serious concerns about the safety of stored blood products. The incident involved temperature settings reportedly changed from around -30°C to 110°C, potentially putting donor samples and transfusion plasma at risk.
The attack reportedly occurred overnight between November 1 and 2, 2026. It involved Coolworld, a company responsible for supplying and maintaining refrigeration equipment at healthcare facilities.
How Hackers Targeted Blood Storage Systems
Facilities in France’s Bourgogne-Franche-Comté region were among those reportedly affected. However, authorities have not disclosed the total number of refrigeration units involved.
France’s Health Ministry confirmed that an on-call technician noticed the unusual temperature settings during the night. The technician’s discovery allowed staff to respond immediately and prevent operational disruption.
Initially, reports indicated that the affected freezers held donor samples used for blood safety monitoring. However, the French Blood Establishment (EFS) later confirmed that frozen blood plasma intended for transfusions was also stored in the equipment.
Despite the alarming incident, authorities have reported no plasma losses, disruption to transfusion services, or harm to patients.
Did the Freezers Actually Reach 110°C?
Although the reported figure raised concerns, the freezers did not necessarily reach 110°C. Instead, hackers allegedly entered that temperature into the refrigeration control system.
This distinction matters because the setting does not establish the actual temperature inside the equipment. Authorities have not disclosed how long the altered settings remained active or the temperatures the stored products experienced.
Nevertheless, the incident highlighted the importance of maintaining reliable refrigeration systems for medical supplies.
Why Frozen Blood Plasma Needs Strict Temperature Control
Fresh frozen plasma requires storage at -25°C or below. Therefore, prolonged exposure to higher temperatures could compromise its suitability for medical transfusions.
Blood products require carefully controlled storage conditions to preserve their quality and safety. Consequently, any unexpected change in refrigeration settings can demand immediate attention.
In this case, the presence of transfusion plasma in the affected equipment raised concerns beyond routine monitoring samples. However, officials have not reported any confirmed loss or patient safety consequences.
Hackers’ Identity and Motive Remain Unknown
Authorities have yet to identify the hackers or explain how they accessed the refrigeration systems. Moreover, officials have not revealed the number of affected units or the duration of the incident.
The circumstances surrounding the intrusion remain unclear. Meanwhile, the reported temperature manipulation has drawn attention to the risks facing essential healthcare infrastructure.
Although staff acted quickly after detecting the unusual settings, several questions remain unanswered. Investigators have yet to disclose who carried out the attack, how access occurred, and whether the refrigeration systems suffered further consequences.
