President Asif Ali Zardari has approved the Tamgha-e-Shujaat for Furqan Ali, the Karachi firefighter who died rescuing people during the Gul Plaza fire.
The national bravery award recognises his courage and dedication while responding to one of Karachi’s deadliest fire tragedies. Furqan lost his life while attempting to save people trapped inside the burning commercial building.
Karachi Mayor Barrister Murtaza Wahab had pushed for national recognition of the firefighter’s bravery and service.
Who Was Firefighter Furqan Ali?
Furqan Ali, 36, served in the Karachi Metropolitan Corporation (KMC) Fire Department from 2018. He was posted at the Nazimabad Fire Station and came from a family of firefighters.
He joined the department under the deceased quota after his father, also a firefighter, died while serving.
Beyond his public service, Furqan had recently started his own family. He married around a year and a half before his death and had a child.
His sacrifice during the Gul Plaza emergency has now brought national recognition to his service and commitment.
How Furqan Lost His Life in the Gul Plaza Fire
The Gul Plaza fire erupted on the night of January 17, 2026, along Karachi’s M.A. Jinnah Road. Firefighters battled the massive blaze for around 36 hours before bringing it under control on January 19.
Furqan was among the rescue personnel deployed to tackle the emergency and help people trapped inside. However, he fell into the wreckage during the operation and became trapped beneath the debris.
He died while serving at the disaster site, leaving behind his family and colleagues.
The tragedy claimed 79 lives, according to the final investigation report. Consequently, the devastating incident also intensified attention on fire safety measures in commercial buildings.
Nazimabad Fire Station to Be Renamed After Furqan
Following Furqan’s death, Mayor Murtaza Wahab announced plans to rename the Nazimabad Fire Station in his honour.
The mayor also announced Rs. 10 million in financial assistance for the bereaved family. Additionally, he assured them that Furqan’s benefits and entitlements would continue.
These commitments aim to support the family while preserving the memory of his service.
Tamgha-e-Shujaat Recognises His Bravery
The approval of the Tamgha-e-Shujaat adds national recognition to Furqan Ali’s sacrifice during the Gul Plaza rescue operation.
His actions reflected the risks firefighters face while responding to emergencies and protecting lives. Moreover, the honour highlights his dedication to public service, even in extremely dangerous conditions.
Furqan’s legacy will also live on through the planned renaming of his fire station, keeping his contribution remembered within the department and community.
The recognition honours a firefighter who lost his life while trying to protect others, turning his final rescue mission into a lasting symbol of courage.
