Four people, including two women and a child, were safely rescued after becoming stranded on a chairlift in the Shau area of Kalam, Upper Swat, on Wednesday.
According to 24NewsHD TV, Rescue 1122 teams and officials from relevant departments reached the location soon after receiving information about the incident. The teams brought specialised equipment and launched an operation to evacuate the stranded passengers.
Local residents also joined the rescue efforts. Heavy machinery from the Upper Swat Development Authority, cranes, police personnel and district administration officials assisted the teams during the operation.
Assistant Commissioner Kalam supervised the rescue operation and coordinated the efforts of the participating departments.
The incident once again highlighted safety concerns surrounding locally operated chairlifts, commonly known as “dolis”, which are used by residents in several mountainous areas of Swat.
A similar incident occurred in December 2025 when four people, including a woman and a child, became trapped in a chairlift installed over the Swat River in Bahrain.
According to a Rescue 1122 spokesperson, the family was travelling across the river when the chairlift suddenly stopped because of a technical malfunction.
Rescue personnel reached the location after receiving the emergency call and successfully evacuated all four passengers.
Authorities have previously stressed the importance of maintaining chairlift systems and ensuring proper safety arrangements, particularly in mountainous areas where such transport facilities remain an important means of crossing rivers and reaching remote communities.
