The Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) has arrested four suspects in Karachi for their alleged involvement in preparing fake documents for Afghan nationals.
According to the FIA, the arrested individuals include officials from the National Database and Registration Authority (Nadra), a private agent and a watchman.
The agency said the suspects allegedly helped issue false identity documents and made illegal changes to official records.
Nadra Officials Among Those Arrested
In a statement, FIA spokesperson identified the suspects as Nadra Assistant Director Imamul Haq, Deputy Assistant Director Fayyaz Ahmed, watchman Junaid Ahmed and private agent Muhammad Umar Shah.
During the operation, the agency recovered important records and evidence from the suspects.
Furthermore, the FIA has expanded its investigation and expects more arrests as officials continue examining the alleged network.
The spokesperson said, โFurther significant revelations and arrests are expected during the investigation, and all facilitators and key figures linked to this network will be brought to justice.โ
Investigation Continues Into Alleged Network
The FIAโs initial investigation revealed that the suspects allegedly facilitated fake identity documents for Afghan citizens.
The agency also examined claims of record manipulation and other illegal activities connected to the group.
Moreover, the FIA spokesperson said investigators are looking into possible links between the network and terrorist elements.
โInitial evidence points to links between this network and terrorist elements, a matter that is currently under further investigation,โ the spokesperson said.
Concerns Raised Over Missing Nadra Official
The FIA launched the operation after the family of suspect Fayyaz Ahmed approached police regarding his reported disappearance.
Additionally, the Human Rights Commission of Pakistan expressed concerns and urged the Sindh government to speed up efforts to locate the missing official.
Pakistan has hosted millions of Afghan nationals over several decades due to conflicts in the region.
Meanwhile, the government has increased action against Afghan citizens living illegally in Pakistan following a recent repatriation drive.
Earlier, the FIA arrested three Nadra officials in Chakwal for allegedly issuing a Computerised National Identity Card to an Afghan national currently in jail.
The agency also arrested a Nadra official in Karachi in April over similar allegations involving fake identity cards for Afghan nationals.
