BANGKOK: The government of Thailand has provided an update on its visa-free tourist policy, confirming that no changes have been made at this time.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs clarified that the current 60-day visa-free stay for foreigners remains unchanged, as no new regulations have been implemented. Nikorndej Balankura, spokesperson for the Ministry, reassured tourists that they can continue to benefit from the existing visa-free arrangements.
However, the government is actively reviewing the policy as part of broader efforts to tighten security and address illegal activities at popular tourist destinations, including Phuket, Chiang Mai, Pattaya, Hua Hin, Koh Samui, and Bangkok.
This clarification comes after reports suggesting a potential reduction of the visa-free stay from 60 days to 30 days. Authorities have raised concerns about foreigners engaging in unauthorized work or business without proper permits, leading to questions about the economic impact of the extended stay.
Last year, Thailand extended the visa-free stay to 60 days for citizens of 93 countries in a bid to boost tourism and economic growth. Despite this, feedback from travel operators shows that most tourists spend no more than 21 days in the country.
The government continues to assess the benefits and drawbacks of its tourist policy as discussions progress. In the meantime, the Royal Thai Embassy in Pakistan has introduced an e-visa system to simplify the application process for Pakistani travelers. This system allows applicants to submit their visa applications online, eliminating the need for a physical visit to the embassy. With approvals promised within 14 working days, the e-visa system is designed to provide greater convenience and efficiency for travelers.
Thailand, renowned for its rich history, stunning beaches, and vibrant culture, remains a top destination for tourists worldwide.
