PEMRA issues regulatory notice to Pakistan’s Broadcasting and Advertising Agencies

PEMRA issued a notice for advertising & broadcasting agencies regarding the nature of their content which seems irrelevant to the selling products, that is, tea or biscuit commercials do not need dancing to be sold. Further adding that the content visuals go against our cultural and religious norms too. PEMRA issued a statement saying,

“All stakeholders are further advised to stop the rampant use of themes/content which does not correspond with the nature of the products.”

The advisory also stated that the satellite television channel to have their advertisements reviewed by the ‘PEMRA In-house Monitoring Committee’ which considers what is acceptable for our consumers as well as our culture. According to Muhammad Ali Khan, Minister of Parliamentary Affairs, the visuals of young boys and girls dancing together often seen in our commercials have ‘damaging effects on the youth.’ He believes it is ‘anti-Islamic’ and thus misleading the youth.
