ISTANBUL: A video circulating on social media shows the Boeing 767, belonging to FedEx Express, using its back landing gear and then lowering its nose with the front portion of the fuselage.
The plane, which was on its final leg from Paris to Istanbul, had pilots who realized the front landing gear failed to open, as stated by the state-run news agency Anadolu.
The aircraft informed the control tower in Istanbul about the malfunction and managed to touch down with guidance from the tower, remaining on the runway, according to a ministry statement.
Although airport rescue and firefighting teams were deployed before landing, there were no reported injuries.
The reason for the landing gear failure remains unclear. The involved aircraft is a nearly 10-year-old Boeing 767 freighter, a common cargo plane based on the 767 passenger model from the 1980s.
Turkey’s Ministry of Transport and Infrastructure is conducting examinations at the scene as part of the ongoing investigation.
FedEx stated it is coordinating with investigation authorities and will provide further information as it becomes available.
The runway was temporarily closed, but other runways at Istanbul airport were still operating normally, according to the airport operator IGA.
Manufacturers typically aren’t involved in the operation or maintenance of jets once they enter service. However, Boeing has faced intense media and regulatory scrutiny following incidents involving its 737s.
