CFIA Warns of Possible Bacterial Contamination
The Canadian Food Inspection Agency has issued a nationwide recall for Heavenly Spices Garlic Powder sold through Dollarama.
The product may be contaminated with Bacillus cereus, a bacterium capable of causing foodborne illness.
The recall applies to 70-gram containers with UPC number 6 67888 50634 7. The affected packages carry the code BB: 2029 JAN 30 GP 30ZV PIT.
The product was distributed across Canada through physical stores and online sales channels. Dollarama L.P. is listed as the recalling company.
The recall was initiated on July 14, 2026, and published by the CFIA on July 15. It has been classified as a Class 2 recall.
A Class 2 classification indicates a moderate health risk. Consumption may cause temporary or medically reversible health effects, but serious consequences are considered unlikely.
The CFIA has instructed consumers and retailers not to use, sell, serve or distribute the affected garlic powder.
Customers should carefully examine the product size, UPC and best-before code before deciding whether their package is included in the recall.
Bacillus Cereus Can Cause Food Poisoning Symptoms
Bacillus cereus is a bacterium associated with different forms of food poisoning.
Symptoms may include nausea, vomiting, abdominal cramps and watery diarrhoea. Depending on the type of toxin involved, illness can begin within several hours of eating contaminated food.
The US Food and Drug Administration says one form of Bacillus cereus illness can produce abdominal cramps, watery diarrhoea and nausea. Symptoms may last between 24 and 48 hours.
Another form can cause nausea and vomiting within one to six hours of consuming contaminated food.
Most cases are short-lived, but consumers who develop severe or persistent symptoms should seek medical advice.
People should not attempt to use the recalled powder simply because it appears or smells normal. Food contaminated with harmful bacteria may not show visible signs of spoilage.
The CFIA notice applies to retailers as well as consumers. Restaurants, food businesses and other organisations must not serve or distribute the affected product.
Dollarama Offers Replacement E-Gift Card
Dollarama has advised customers who purchased the recalled product to throw it away.
A company spokesperson said affected customers could contact Dollarama Customer Service to receive a $2 e-gift card as a replacement.
Dollaramaโs official recall guidance advises customers to stop using recalled products immediately. Consumers can contact customer service with a photograph of the product and its lot number.
The retailer also says customers without a receipt or original packaging should contact its customer service department for information about the refund procedure.
Dollarama has placed the Heavenly Spices recall on its official product recall page. The company says recalled products are blocked across its point-of-sale system to prevent further sales.
Customers who still have the product should avoid opening or using it. They should follow Dollaramaโs instructions for disposal and contact the company directly regarding the replacement gift card.
The recall highlights the importance of checking package codes instead of relying only on the product name. Other Heavenly Spices products or garlic powder packages carrying different identification details may not be included.
