Afzal Gujjar Injured in Matta Assault
Local transport leader Afzal Gujjar was injured while three people, including his son, were killed in an armed attack in Swatโs Matta area, police said on Monday.
The attack took place on Sunday night in the Shakardara area. Unidentified armed men opened fire on Gujjarโs vehicle using heavy weapons, according to police.
Gujjar sustained injuries in one leg and was shifted to hospital for medical treatment. His son Behram Khan, his nephew and a security guard were killed in the attack.
Police said the incident led to an exchange of fire. Heavy contingents were later sent to the area after the attack was reported.
Swat District Police Officer Umar Khan said police surrounded the area and launched a search operation. He said three suspects had been arrested, while the operation was still underway.
The police officer assured that law enforcement agencies were pursuing the attackers and would reach the culprits soon.
Police Launch Search Operation
Officials said an investigation had been started to determine the motive behind the attack. Police are also trying to establish the exact sequence of events.
A Swat Police spokesperson said evidence was being collected from the scene. Law enforcement agencies were actively searching for the assailants.
The attack has created fear and anger in the area. Residents have demanded immediate action and stronger security measures.
On Monday morning, family members and local people blocked the Matta-Mingora road in protest. They placed the bodies of the victims on the road and demanded the arrest of those responsible.
The protesters said the road would remain blocked until justice was served.
Family Alleges Delayed Response
Afzal Gujjar later claimed that around 40 armed men attacked him and his family. He alleged that the attackers were carrying heavy weapons, including rocket launchers.
He said police and law enforcement agencies failed to stop the attackers despite being informed about the situation.
Gujjar claimed he continued receiving calls while in Matta Hospital, telling him that the attackers were still firing late into the night.
He also alleged that the attackers set his vehicles on fire before fleeing in the early morning.
The serious allegations have added pressure on local authorities to explain their response and speed up the investigation.
The incident has raised fresh concerns over law and order in Swat. Local residents say armed attacks must be dealt with firmly to prevent further fear and instability.
Police say the search operation is continuing and those involved will be brought to justice.
