Mali witnessed a wave of coordinated attacks targeting its capital and several key regions early Saturday. The incidents sparked fear as explosions and gunfire echoed across multiple locations.
Authorities confirmed that armed groups launched simultaneous assaults in Bamako and other parts of the country. As a result, security forces quickly moved to contain the situation.
Explosions and Gunfire Near Key Military Base
Two loud explosions were heard near the Kati military base, located outside Bamako. Shortly after, intense gunfire followed, raising alarm among residents.
Witnesses reported that soldiers immediately sealed roads around the area. Meanwhile, security deployments increased to prevent further escalation.
At the same time, similar incidents unfolded in other regions. Areas including Sevare, Kidal, and Gao experienced unrest, suggesting a coordinated operation.
A witness in Sevare described the situation, saying, “There’s gunfire everywhere.”
Army Confirms Ongoing Operations
The military acknowledged that unidentified “terrorist” groups carried out attacks on multiple positions. However, officials did not disclose exact locations.
They confirmed that fighting remains ongoing. Therefore, citizens were urged to stay calm and follow official instructions.
Security agencies continue monitoring developments closely. In addition, efforts are underway to restore order across affected regions.
Militant Groups Suspected Behind Attacks
Mali has long struggled with insurgencies linked to regional extremist groups. These include affiliates of al Qaeda and Daesh operating in West Africa.
Security sources indicated that Jama’at Nusrat al-Islam wal-Muslimin (JNIM) may have played a role. However, no group has officially claimed responsibility yet.
Separately, a Tuareg-led alliance claimed control of positions in northern areas. Still, these claims remain unverified.
Gunfire Reported Near Airport Zone
Gunfire was also heard near a military camp close to Bamako’s airport. The site reportedly hosts foreign security personnel.
Residents confirmed hearing continuous shooting in the area. However, the situation at the airport itself remained unclear.
Security Challenges Persist Despite Leadership Promises
Mali’s leadership has pledged to restore stability after recent coups. However, militant attacks continue to challenge these efforts.
The country faces overlapping threats, including extremist violence and long-standing regional rebellions. Consequently, maintaining security remains a major concern.
Rising Tensions and International Involvement
Mali has recently adjusted its international partnerships. It has relied on foreign security support while exploring new cooperation channels.
At the same time, discussions continue regarding intelligence-sharing arrangements with global partners. These developments highlight growing international interest in regional stability.
