Liam Rosenior has been sacked from his position as Chelsea FC head coach. The reason for the dismissal is a series of poor results by the team in the past eight games, which include seven losses and not having scored in five successive defeats. It is the team’s worst record since 1912, and they will find it difficult to qualify for next year’s Champions League.
Poor results and attacking struggles force decision
Chelsea now sit seven points behind Liverpool FC, who are fifth with a game in hand. In an official statement, the club said the decision was difficult. However, performances had fallen below expectations. This came at a crucial stage of the season.
Rosenior, 41, had joined from RC Strasbourg. He guided them to European qualification in his first season. At Chelsea, he started well. The team went unbeaten early on, recording four wins and two draws. However, form collapsed in March. This led to a series of poor results.
Chelsea also suffered a heavy Champions League exit. They lost 8-2 on aggregate to Paris Saint-Germain. This came after beating the same side in last yearโs Club World Cup final.
Club looks ahead after fan backlash
Problems with the squad have mainly been reflected in the attack where Chelsea went on a run of losing five consecutive games without managing to score a single goal. That has been their longest such streak since a century ago. However, the only exception to that rule was their seven-goal victory in an FA Cup game against Port Vale.
The fans made themselves heard after the game against Brighton by demanding the managerโs firing. Rosenior himself stated after that he would not try to defend that terrible game. He claimed that he felt numb and angry. Besides, he asked players to think about their performance.
Even though the game was bad, the Chelsea defender Trevoh Chalobah said that players gave their best. As he stated, they have been running their socks off.
It seems that Chelsea have fired the manager, having appointed Calum McFarlane as their interim boss till the end of the season. The next important thing to come will be the FA Cup semi-final game against Leeds United. Furthermore, the club plans to conduct a self-analysis and find a new manager.
