KARACHI: CCTV footage and preliminary investigation findings have raised questions about the killing of 26-year-old police constable Abdul Wahab Farooq Khattak during an anti-drug operation in Karachi’s Shireen Jinnah Colony.
Wahab was killed Saturday night during a police operation near Peoples House in Clifton’s Block 1, following information about alleged large-scale narcotics dealing in the area.
According to the initial police account, a team of plainclothes officers arrived on private motorcycles after receiving information about suspected drug dealers. Wahab reportedly told the police post in-charge that his informer would arrange a narcotics purchase from the suspects as part of a sting operation. Two officers were assigned to provide backup.
During the operation, suspected drug dealer Zubair Gul allegedly arrived to deliver narcotics. When Wahab attempted to arrest him, Gul reportedly opened fire and fled.
However, investigators later examined CCTV footage and found details that reportedly raised questions about the incident. Police sources said alleged associates of the suspects, including policeman Sultan Mahmood of Nabi Bakhsh police station, were present at a nearby political party office.
After gunfire erupted, those inside reportedly came outside. Investigators allege that Mahmood drew his weapon and fired at Wahab.
Preliminary findings indicate that Wahab suffered a single gunshot wound and died at the scene. Authorities are investigating alleged links among the suspects, the policeman and political associates.
