CHAKWAL/LAHORE: Crime Control Department chief Sohail Chatha said that CCD personnel reached a location in Chakwal to stop a robbery when a firing incident involving a Pakistani-origin Australian family resulted in the death of a young girl and injuries to two others.
Speaking to the media during a visit to Chakwal, Chatha said the suspects involved in the robbery used a citizenโs vehicle as cover during the operation. He stated that an officer opened fire during the encounter, leading to the tragic incident.
According to the CCD chief, nine-year-old Hania lost her life in the shooting. Meanwhile, her father, Adeel Ahmed, and her brother, Afan, sustained injuries and received medical treatment.
Chatha confirmed that authorities have arrested the officer involved in the firing. He added that police registered a case against the official and assured the family that no individual would receive protection because of their position within the department.
Furthermore, he described the incident as a serious blunder and painful mistake. He revealed that investigators have included Section 302 of the Pakistan Penal Code, which relates to murder, in the case against the accused officer.
The CCD chief emphasized that the department remains committed to combating crime across Punjab. However, he said the actions of one individual should not define the work of the entire institution, which continues to conduct operations against criminal elements throughout the province.
He also assured the public that the investigation would proceed strictly on merit and without interference. In addition, the department plans to review its operational procedures to reduce the risk of similar incidents in the future.
Chatha further stated that the suspects being pursued during the operation had links to Sheikhupura and were allegedly involved in robbery-related activities. Authorities continue efforts to trace and arrest those suspects as the investigation moves forward.
