Nearly 97 percent of Pakistan’s population now has access to broadband internet, Minister of State for IT and Telecom Shaza Fatima informed the National Assembly Standing Committee on Information Technology on Tuesday. She said expanding digital connectivity remains a key government priority.
Internet Usage Continues To Grow
While briefing lawmakers, Shaza Fatima said internet usage has increased significantly in recent years. She attributed the growth to rising demand for digital services across the country.
The minister also highlighted steps taken to strengthen Pakistan’s telecommunications infrastructure. Consequently, the government expanded available mobile spectrum through a recent spectrum auction.
According to Shaza Fatima, the auction held in March increased available mobile spectrum from 274 MHz to 480 MHz. She said the additional spectrum will improve network capacity and support the future rollout of 5G services.
The minister added that stronger telecom infrastructure will help meet increasing consumer demand for faster and more reliable internet services.
Telecom Bill Aims To Expand Connectivity
Shaza Fatima informed the committee that the average internet user in Pakistan spends Rs285 each month on mobile data services. She said affordable internet access remains important as digital adoption continues to grow.
The minister also discussed the proposed Telecom Amendment Bill during the meeting. According to her, the legislation will strengthen the Right of Way (RoW) framework for telecom projects.
Furthermore, she said the improved framework will simplify the installation of telecom infrastructure across the country. As a result, service providers will be able to accelerate broadband expansion more efficiently.
The government expects these measures to improve nationwide digital connectivity while supporting future technological advancements. Officials believe stronger infrastructure and expanded internet access will further boost Pakistan’s digital economy.
