Ashour Strikes Early as Lukaku Inspires Belgian Comeback
SEATTLE: Belgium and Egypt shared the points in a 1-1 draw in their opening Group G match of the FIFA World Cup on Monday, as Romelu Lukakuโs second-half impact denied the Egyptians a historic victory.
Egypt took the lead in the first half through Emam Ashour, who produced a clinical finish to beat Belgian goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois and put his side ahead in Seattle. The goal marked only the second time Egypt had led a World Cup match, raising hopes of a long-awaited first victory on footballโs biggest stage.
However, Belgium responded after the break and eventually found an equalizer following the introduction of Lukaku. The veteran strikerโs attacking movement forced Egyptian defender Mohamed Hany into an own goal, bringing Belgium level midway through the second half.
Despite several late chances, neither side managed to find a winner.
Star Players Create Opportunities at Both Ends
The match featured a highly anticipated battle between Egyptian captain Mohamed Salah and Belgian playmaker Kevin De Bruyne.
De Bruyne threatened early with a dangerous effort and later came close to scoring from a free-kick that struck the outside of the post. Meanwhile, Salah remained influential in attack and nearly doubled Egyptโs advantage, but Courtois produced a crucial save to deny the Liverpool forward.
As the game opened up, both teams created opportunities, while Belgian captain Youri Tielemans also tested the Egyptian defence with a powerful volley.
Group G Race Remains Wide Open
Furthermore, the result leaves both teams with one point as the competition in Group G begins to take shape.
Egypt will now turn their attention to upcoming matches against Iran and New Zealand, hoping to secure their first-ever World Cup victory. Belgium, meanwhile, continue their campaign aiming to improve on their third-place finish at the 2018 tournament.
The draw ensures the group remains finely balanced, with both nations still firmly in contention for a place in the knockout stages as the tournament progresses.
