Bollywood superstar Amitabh Bachchan has sparked debate on social media after a video showed him declining a young fan’s request for a handshake during his 84th birthday celebrations.
The veteran actor stepped outside his Mumbai residence, Jalsa, on October 11 to greet fans who had gathered to celebrate his birthday. However, the interaction took an unexpected turn when some young fans attempted to approach him beyond the security cordon.
Security Guards Intervene as Fans Approach
The viral footage shows Bachchan wearing a red kurta while acknowledging the crowd with folded hands and waves. When a few children moved past security personnel to reach him, his bodyguards intervened and guided them away.
During the gathering, a young female fan also appeared to request a handshake. Bachchan politely declined and continued greeting the crowd from a distance.
The actor later posed in front of a large garland arranged by his fans, thanked them for their affection and returned inside his residence.
Social Media Reactions Remain Divided
The video prompted mixed reactions online. Some viewers sympathised with the young fan, arguing that a brief handshake would have made her birthday experience memorable.
Others defended Bachchan, pointing out that the fans had attempted to move past security. They argued that celebrities should be allowed to maintain personal boundaries, even during public appearances.
The incident has renewed discussion about the expectations placed on celebrities during fan interactions. While admirers often hope for personal moments with their favourite stars, security arrangements can limit direct contact.
Celebrities Extend Birthday Wishes
Several film personalities also shared birthday messages for the legendary actor. Telugu superstar Chiranjeevi praised Bachchan’s dedication to cinema and wished him good health and happiness.
Actress Kajol also celebrated the occasion on social media, describing him as a witty and exceptionally cool personality. Bachchan continues to remain active in the entertainment industry. He is expected to reprise his role as Ashwatthama in the upcoming sequel to Kalki 2898 AD, directed by Nag Ashwin.
The viral birthday video has brought attention to the balance between celebrity accessibility, fan expectations and personal space. Despite the online debate, Bachchan continued his annual tradition of acknowledging the supporters who gathered outside his home.
