Awami National Party (ANP) Senator Aimal Wali Khan on Tuesday voiced support for police actions that resulted in the deaths of rape suspects. He made the remarks during a meeting of the Human Rights Committee while discussing the handling of serious sexual violence cases.
Aimal Wali referred to an incident in which two wives of a man were allegedly gang-raped in front of him. He said police acted correctly by killing four suspects involved in the case.
Debate Over Justice System and Crime Response
During the meeting, the senator acknowledged that extra-judicial killings are against the law. However, he argued that many suspects in rape cases are later acquitted by courts, which raises concerns about the effectiveness of the justice system.
He further stated that out-of-court measures would not be discussed if suspects consistently faced accountability through legal channels. Committee Chairperson Samina Mumtaz Zehri expressed agreement with his concerns during the session.
Zehri said Pakistan’s primary challenge was not legislation but implementation. According to her, police often fail to perform their duties effectively, creating gaps in the justice process.
Child Protection Concerns Raised in Committee
The committee also reviewed data shared by the National Commission on the Rights of the Child. According to the figures presented, 17,000 children were reportedly raped across Pakistan during 2025.
Aimal Wali also commented on allegations of child abuse at a school in Islamabad. He said that if the allegations proved true, authorities should shut down the institution and take strict action.
Moreover, he warned that such incidents raise broader concerns about child safety nationwide. He stressed the need for stronger accountability measures to protect children.
Later, a verbal exchange occurred between Aimal Wali and PTI Senator Zarqa during media interactions. Both lawmakers criticized each other’s political positions while debating governance, inflation, and the use of official resources by political leaders.
