An accused wanted in the rape of an eight-year-old girl was killed during a police encounter in Gujranwala on Tuesday.
The encounter took place within the jurisdiction of Saddar Police Station, according to police.
Suspect Killed During Exchange of Fire
Police said the suspect, identified as Rashid, was accused of repeatedly assaulting the girl while taking her to and from school.
According to police, Rashid and another suspect attempted to escape from custody after opening fire on the police team.
An exchange of fire followed. Police said Rashid was fatally shot during the incident.
Police also recovered an illegal weapon and a motorcycle from the suspect.
Police Launch Search for Second Suspect
The second suspect managed to escape from the scene during the exchange of fire.
Police have formed several teams to locate and arrest him.
The teams are operating under the supervision of the Deputy Superintendent of Police, People Colony, Gujranwala.
Authorities said efforts were continuing to arrest the escaped suspect and bring him before the law.
CPO Vows Strict Action Against Crimes Against Children
Gujranwala CPO Dr Sardar Ghiyas Gul Khan said police have adopted a zero-tolerance policy toward crimes against children and women.
He directed officers to take strict action against individuals involved in such offences.
The case remains under investigation as police continue efforts to apprehend the suspect who escaped from the scene.
