Pakistani actor Usama Khan says censorship is limiting the country’s presence on global streaming platforms. He believes filmmakers lack the creative freedom needed to produce internationally competitive content.
The actor shared his views through a series of Instagram Stories. His remarks come amid growing debate over Pakistanโs limited representation on platforms like Netflix.
Usama argued that global OTT services prefer bold, fact-based productions over conventional family dramas. Therefore, he questioned whether Pakistanโs current environment supports such storytelling.
Actor Calls for Greater Creative Freedom
Referring to a recently banned film in a neighbouring country, Usama raised questions about Pakistanโs film industry. He asked whether local filmmakers could produce historically accurate projects without restrictions.
According to the actor, audiences want documentary-style films exploring Pakistanโs history with factual accuracy. He said such productions could attract both local and international viewers.
Usama suggested several historical and political subjects for cinematic exploration. These included Quaid-e-Azam Muhammad Ali Jinnahโs final ambulance journey and Fatima Jinnahโs 1965 presidential campaign.
He also mentioned the unresolved deaths of Bhutto family members and developments in Kashmir and Balochistan. Additionally, he referred to Pakistanโs political crises, the 1999 military coup, and treason allegations against political leaders.
Debate Over Pakistanโs OTT Future Continues
In another Instagram Story, Usama questioned whether authorities would permit such stories to be told transparently. He argued that global streaming platforms demand diverse and realistic genres.
Furthermore, he said decision-makers appeared reluctant to embrace that level of creative change. Consequently, he believes Pakistan continues missing opportunities on international OTT platforms.
His comments have generated widespread discussion across social media. Many users agreed that Pakistani creators possess strong storytelling abilities but require greater creative freedom to compete globally.
The debate over Pakistanโs presence on international streaming services continues as actors, filmmakers, and officials share differing views on the industry’s future.
