United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has described a reported agreement involving the disarmament of Palestinian group Hamas as a rare positive development for the Middle East.
His remarks came as tensions continue to rise across the region, with ongoing military escalation creating wider concerns about global stability.
UN Chief Highlights Disarmament Agreement
Speaking on Friday, Guterres said the Hamas disarmament agreement announced recently stood out as an unusual moment of optimism amid months of conflict.
He referred to the announcement as one of the few positive developments during a period marked by increasing regional instability.
“The only good news in recent days is the announcement by the US president of an agreement for Hamas to relinquish their weapons and for Israel to withdraw its forces from Gaza,” he said.
The UN chief stressed that ending hostilities across the region remains essential. Moreover, he called for an end to fighting on all fronts.
“Let me be clear: the fighting must stop on all fronts in the region,” he said.
Growing Concerns Over Regional Instability
Guterres also addressed the broader security situation in the Middle East. According to him, the escalation in the Gulf has continued for nearly six months.
He warned that what began as a regional conflict is increasingly affecting international stability.
“We are now six months into the military escalation in the Gulf. What began as a regional conflict is increasingly becoming a driver of global instability,” he said.
The UN secretary-general emphasized the need for diplomatic efforts to prevent further escalation and reduce the impact of conflicts spreading beyond their original areas.
International Focus on Gaza and Regional Peace
The reported agreement has drawn attention amid continued international efforts to seek solutions to conflicts in Gaza and other parts of the Middle East.
