Lebanon has signaled a possible shift toward long-term stability following a recent ceasefire with Israel. The development comes after a 10-day pause in hostilities took effect.
President Joseph Aoun addressed the nation and outlined a vision for the future. He described the moment as a turning point for Lebanonโs political direction.
โNow, we all stand before a new phase,โ Aoun said in his speech.
โIt is the phase of transition from working on a ceasefire to working on permanent agreements that preserve the rights of our people, the unity of our land, and the sovereignty of our nation.โ
From Ceasefire to Long-Term Stability
The ceasefire followed days of intense regional tensions. Lebanon had been drawn into the conflict earlier this year.
However, the truce has opened the door for diplomatic engagement. Therefore, leaders are now focusing on lasting agreements.
Aoun emphasized that Lebanon aims to protect its national interests. He also stressed unity and sovereignty as key priorities.
Strong Message on Sovereignty and Independence
In his speech, the president delivered a firm message on national independence. He stated that Lebanon would no longer serve external interests.
โToday, we negotiate for ourselvesโฆ we are no longer a pawn in anyoneโs game, nor an arena for anyoneโs wars, and we never will be again,โ he said.
This statement reflects growing efforts to assert independent decision-making. Moreover, it highlights a shift in Lebanonโs political stance.
Aoun also claimed that the government has regained control over national decisions. According to him, this marks a historic moment.
Diplomatic Engagement and International Support
The president acknowledged international efforts that contributed to the ceasefire. He thanked key global and regional actors for their role.
At the same time, diplomatic activity has increased in recent days. Lebanon and Israel recently held a rare meeting through their representatives.
This meeting marked the first direct engagement in decades. Therefore, it signals a cautious move toward dialogue.
Aoun clarified that such talks do not weaken Lebanonโs position. Instead, he framed them as a strategic step.
โDirect talks with Israel were not a sign of weakness nor a concessionโฆ negotiations do not mean, and will never mean, giving up any right, conceding any principle, or compromising the sovereignty of this nation,โ he said.
Firm Stance on National Rights
Despite openness to negotiations, Lebanon maintains a strong stance on sovereignty. Aoun made it clear that no agreement will undermine national interests.
โI hereby affirmโฆ that there will be no agreement that infringes upon our national rights, diminishes the dignity of our steadfast people, or relinquishes an iota of this nationโs soil,โ he said.
This position reflects a careful balance between diplomacy and national protection. Therefore, any future agreements will likely face strict conditions.
Looking Ahead: Uncertainty and Opportunity
Lebanon now stands at a critical juncture. The shift from conflict to negotiation presents both opportunities and risks.
While the ceasefire offers temporary relief, long-term stability remains uncertain. However, continued dialogue could lead to meaningful progress.
Aounโs message signals cautious optimism. At the same time, it underscores the importance of safeguarding national sovereignty.
