Gilgit-Baltistan has proposed launching direct flights between Skardu and Kashgar in China’s Xinjiang region, marking a significant step towards improving regional connectivity. The proposal aims to strengthen tourism, trade, and economic cooperation while making travel more convenient for people on both sides of the border.
The plan was discussed during a meeting between Gilgit-Baltistan Chief Minister Amjad Hussain Azar and Chinese Ambassador Jiang Zaidong. Besides enhancing air links, the discussions also focused on expanding investment opportunities and promoting closer people-to-people ties.
Direct Skardu-Kashgar Flights Proposed
The Gilgit-Baltistan government has suggested introducing direct flights between Skardu and Kashgar.
If approved, the route would improve air connectivity between northern Pakistan and China’s Xinjiang region.
Moreover, the proposed service is expected to reduce travel time and make cross-border travel easier for tourists and business travellers.
Officials believe stronger air links could also support broader regional cooperation in the years ahead.
Tourism and Trade Expected to Benefit
The proposed flight route is expected to create new opportunities for the tourism sector.
Skardu and the surrounding northern areas attract thousands of domestic and international visitors every year. Therefore, easier access from China could encourage more tourist arrivals.
In addition, improved connectivity may strengthen trade relations by making business travel more convenient.
The proposal also seeks to support long-term economic cooperation between Gilgit-Baltistan and China’s Xinjiang region.
Visa-on-Arrival Proposal for Chinese Tourists
During the meeting, the Gilgit-Baltistan government also proposed introducing a visa-on-arrival facility for Chinese tourists visiting destinations such as Hunza.
However, the proposal remains subject to approval by the federal government.
If implemented, the measure could simplify travel procedures and encourage more Chinese visitors to explore northern Pakistan.
Chinese Investment Encouraged
The discussions also covered potential investment opportunities across Gilgit-Baltistan.
The regional government invited Chinese companies to invest in several key sectors, including:
- Tourism
- Mining
- Hydropower
- Renewable energy
- Infrastructure development
Officials believe greater foreign investment could support economic growth while creating new opportunities across the region.
China to Review the Proposals
Chinese Ambassador Jiang Zaidong acknowledged the proposals presented during the meeting.
He stated that the recommendations, including the proposed direct flight route and other initiatives, would be forwarded to the relevant Chinese authorities for consideration.
Although no final decision has been announced, the proposals reflect ongoing efforts to strengthen cooperation between Pakistan and China.
If approved, the Skardu-Kashgar route could become an important link for tourism, trade, and regional connectivity while opening new opportunities for both countries.
