LAHORE: The Pakistan Tehreek-i-Insaf (PTI) has challenged the alleged seizure of nomination papers by the police in the Lahore High Court. The petition, filed by Umair Niazi, names the inspector general of police and others as parties in the case.
The petition argues that preventing individuals from contesting elections is a violation of the Constitution and requests the court to take action against those responsible for the alleged theft of nomination papers. PTI demands that the court intervene to stop any harassment of its leaders.
In response to the alleged seizure of nomination papers and concerns about a lack of a level playing field, the PTI has decided to approach the Election Commission of Pakistan.
PTI leaders, including Umair Niazi’s father and PTI Chairman Gohar Khan, have claimed that nomination papers were confiscated from party members. Taimur Ali Jhagra, another PTI leader, expressed similar concerns about not having a level playing field.
This situation adds to a backdrop of political parties expressing concerns about fairness and transparency in the electoral process, with the PPP claiming that the bureaucracy favors the PML-N in Punjab and that they are not allowed to run a fair election campaign.
PTI Chairman Urges Judiciary to Safeguard Democratic Rights Ahead of Elections
In another development, Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) Chairman Barrister Gohar urged the judiciary to uphold constitutional responsibilities, emphasizing that the judiciary plays a crucial role in safeguarding the rights of political parties.
Speaking to the media in Islamabad on Thursday, Barrister Gohar highlighted the significance of the day, expressing concern that excluding 70 percent of the country’s popular party from the election would raise questions about the fairness of the electoral process.
