As 2023 Nears Its End, Winter Solstice Marks Shortest Day Tomorrow

The journey of the year 2023 is coming to an end, and tomorrow, December 22nd, will mark its shortest day.

This date coincides with the winter solstice, the point when those in the northern hemisphere experience the shortest day and longest night of the year, marking the first day of winter.

The term “solstice” is derived from the Latin words “sol,” meaning sun, and “sistere,” meaning “to come to a stop or make stand.”

According to astronomy, the night of December 23 will be the longest night of the year. On this day, the sun is expected to rise at 6:59 AM and set at 5:10 PM, providing approximately 10 hours of daylight. The night will extend for more than 14 hours.

From June 22 to December 22, the duration of daylight was shortened by 80 seconds each day, resulting in approximately 10 hours of daylight by December 22.

Conversely, from December 22 to June 21, the length of daylight increases by 45 seconds each day. March 21 and 22, 2024, are anticipated to have equal durations of day and night.

Global Disruption: X Services Experience Widespread Outage Worldwide

On Thursday, the social media platform formerly known as Twitter, now referred to as X, experienced global outages for just over an hour.

Downdetector.com, which tracks outages by compiling status reports, reported that more than 47,000 users in the United States faced access issues with X and X Pro.

Users in the UK and Asia also reported being unable to view posts on the platform, seeing a message that said: “Welcome to X!”

X, now owned by Elon Musk, was asked for comment, but there is no official response yet. Elon Musk acquired Twitter for $44 billion (£35 billion) last year.

The hashtag #TwitterDown quickly started trending as reports of the outages emerged. However, the outage was relatively short-lived, with users regaining access to the platform after just over an hour.

Since Elon Musk’s acquisition of the platform, X has faced challenges, including a loss of advertising revenue. Additionally, there have been accusations of allowing antisemitic posts to appear next to advertising.

In response to such allegations, the company sued the left-leaning pressure group Media Matters for America, which had made the accusation.
