At least 21 people have died in Pakistan during large-scale anti-US protests following the killing of Iran’s Supreme Leader, Ali Khamenei. Violent clashes erupted in multiple cities as demonstrators expressed outrage over the incident.
Chaos at Karachi US Consulate
The deadliest unrest occurred outside the US Consulate in Karachi. Protesters managed to enter the consulate premises, smashing windows and setting fire to parts of the reception area. Crowds also torched a police check post and burned tires on nearby streets.
Police responded with tear gas and aerial firing to control the crowd. Hundreds of demonstrators had marched toward the consulate, shouting slogans and demanding accountability. Several protesters were injured during the clashes. Authorities urged citizens to remain peaceful and allow investigations to proceed.
Protests Spread Across Major Cities
Anger quickly spread to other cities, including Lahore, where demonstrators clashed with police on their way to the US Consulate. In Islamabad, protesters initially gathered outside a hotel before attempting to march toward the Diplomatic Enclave.
Law enforcement blocked all roads leading to foreign embassies. When some protesters tried to force entry, police deployed tear gas and carried out aerial firing to disperse the crowd. Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi personally engaged with demonstrators, urging calm and peaceful protest.
Gilgit-Baltistan Faces Deadly Unrest
Northern Gilgit-Baltistan also witnessed severe protests. Eleven protesters died during clashes with security forces. Seven people were killed in Gilgit district and four in Skardu valley. Around 40 others sustained injuries.
Protesters set fire to a UN office in Skardu, prompting authorities to declare high alert in the region. Security forces continue monitoring demonstrations closely to prevent further escalation.
Heightened Security and Public Warnings
The federal capital remains on edge as authorities maintain strict security measures around diplomatic areas. Citizens are advised to avoid large gatherings and remain aware of their surroundings. Foreign nationals in Pakistan have been warned to follow safety protocols and maintain updated travel registrations.
Meanwhile, private digital infrastructure faced disruption attempts. Authorities are investigating security breaches to ensure communication channels remain secure during ongoing unrest.
