Frontier Constabulary
ISLAMABAD: The federal government has initiated a major structural reform of the Frontier Constabulary (FC), aiming to transform it into a national-level law enforcement agency with expanded jurisdiction and enhanced operational capacity.
According to official sources, the revamped force will be renamed the Federal Constabulary and will be empowered to operate across Pakistan.
The proposed transformation will allow the Federal Constabulary to function not only within the existing territories of the provinces but also in key administrative regions including the Islamabad Capital Territory, Azad Jammu and Kashmir, and Gilgit-Baltistan.
This marks a significant expansion from the FC’s traditional role, which has historically been limited to providing security in border regions and supporting civil administrations.
As part of the restructuring, the force will be headed by officers from the Police Service of Pakistan (PSP), ensuring professional leadership and standardized policing practices across its ranks. This move is aimed at enhancing command efficiency, accountability, and coordination with other law enforcement and intelligence agencies.
Sources indicate that the primary objective of this overhaul is to bolster the country’s internal security framework. The revamped Federal Constabulary will be tasked with maintaining public order, responding to civil unrest, and playing a frontline role in counterterrorism and riot control operations nationwide.
To formalize this transformation, the federal cabinet is expected to approve key amendments to the Frontier Constabulary Act of 1915.
Following cabinet endorsement, an ordinance will be issued to grant legal authority to the force, effectively giving it a federal mandate.
This development comes on the heels of Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif’s launch of Pakistan’s first dedicated Riot Management Police Force — a specialized unit within the Punjab Police.
The unit has been designed to address growing public safety challenges and is equipped to handle crowd control, protests, and civil disturbances efficiently. Its creation marks a significant milestone in Pakistan’s approach to modern policing.
Together, these initiatives represent a broader national effort to modernize and professionalize Pakistan’s internal security architecture in response to evolving security threats and governance needs.
