Federal Information Technology and Telecommunication Minister Shaza Fatima Khawaja said on Friday that nearly 5.91 million citizens had registered under the Prime Minister’s Fuel Relief Scheme since its launch. She shared the figures while addressing a news conference alongside Minister of State for Finance and Railways Bilal Azhar Kayani.
The minister said more than 6.18 million fuel relief tokens had been generated under the initiative. Out of these, approximately 4.79 million tokens had already been successfully redeemed by eligible citizens.
Government Expands Relief Measures
Shaza Fatima reiterated that the government had removed the five-litre limit for motorcycles, rickshaws, and Qingqi vehicles after receiving public feedback. In addition, authorities removed the ownership requirement for users operating rented motorcycles and rickshaws.
She explained that the scheme was introduced to provide targeted relief amid rising fuel prices and volatility in global oil markets. The fluctuations, she noted, were linked to ongoing regional tensions in the Middle East.
The minister added that the programme supports eligible owners and users of motorcycles, Qingqi vehicles, rickshaws, and cars with engine capacities of up to 800cc. The initiative aims to ensure direct assistance reaches those most affected by increasing fuel costs.
Dashboard Shows Real-Time Progress
During the briefing, Shaza Fatima presented a live dashboard displaying registration numbers, generated tokens, redeemed tokens, and provincial statistics. She said the technology-enabled system had been designed to maintain transparency and simplify access to relief.
The minister also thanked petrol pump dealers, oil marketing companies, and the Oil and Gas Regulatory Authority for supporting the programme. Furthermore, she urged petrol pump staff to assist citizens with registration and provide information about the scheme.
According to the minister, the programme continues to operate smoothly. She added that petrol pumps participating in the scheme are receiving payments within a 24-hour cycle.
