The Sindh government has announced plans to provide free electric scooters to 50,000 women across the province as part of a wider initiative to improve women’s mobility.
Sindh Senior Minister for Information and Transport Sharjeel Inam Memon made the announcement while speaking at a ceremony in Mirpurkhas.
The event marked the distribution of pink electric scooters to eligible women who completed the required training and passed their driving tests.
Electric Scooters to Reach Women Across Sindh
Memon said the provincial government would continue expanding the programme. According to him, eligible women in every district of Sindh would eventually benefit from the initiative.
The government has linked scooter distribution to driving skills and training. Memon also said authorities were providing the scooters without political or other discrimination.
The initiative aims to make transportation more accessible for women. Moreover, easier access to personal transport could support women travelling to workplaces, educational institutions and other destinations.
Memon said the number of women obtaining driving licences had increased significantly. He attributed the rise partly to changing attitudes, with more families now allowing women to ride motorcycles.
Sindh to Introduce Pink Taxis
Meanwhile, the provincial government is also planning to introduce pink taxis for women. Memon said the taxi service would form part of broader efforts to improve women’s transportation options. The government expects such initiatives to support women’s participation in economic and social activities.
The minister also warned that the electric scooters distributed through the programme are intended exclusively for women.
He said authorities would take action if men were found using the scooters.
The Sindh government’s latest announcement expands its focus on women-focused transport initiatives. For now, officials are continuing scooter distribution among women who meet the programme’s training and licensing requirements.
