A desperate attempt to cross into Iran through Afghanistan’s southwestern desert ended in tragedy after five Afghan migrants lost their lives. Authorities are also searching for 14 others who remain missing after the group reportedly became stranded in harsh desert conditions.

Officials believe the victims died from extreme heat and severe thirst while attempting to cross the remote border through Nimroz province.

The incident highlights the dangers many Afghan migrants continue to face as they seek employment opportunities outside their country through illegal routes.

Search Continues for 14 Missing Migrants

According to local authorities, security personnel recovered the bodies of five people from the deserts of Nimroz province.

Officials said the victims were part of a 19-member group attempting to enter neighboring Iran through remote desert areas stretching across Helmand and Nimroz provinces.

Meanwhile, search operations continue to locate the remaining 14 individuals, whose whereabouts remain unknown.

Authorities have not confirmed whether the missing migrants are alive.

Extreme Heat and Thirst Believed to Have Caused Deaths

Police believe the group encountered extreme weather conditions during the dangerous journey.

Investigators said the migrants likely died from dehydration and intense heat after becoming stranded in isolated desert areas with limited access to water.

Many Afghan citizens, particularly young people, attempt to enter Iran illegally in search of employment and better economic opportunities.

However, these journeys often involve dangerous routes through deserts and mountainous regions. Consequently, migrants face life-threatening risks, including dehydration, harsh weather, and exhaustion.

Illegal border crossings have repeatedly resulted in fatalities over the past several years.

Last year, dozens of Afghan migrants reportedly died after being exposed to freezing temperatures while attempting to cross into Iran.

Afghan Refugees Continue to Face Challenges

Iran remains one of the main destinations for Afghan migrants and refugees.

According to the United Nations Refugee Agency, about 780,000 Afghan refugees currently reside in Iran. However, an Iranian government headcount conducted in 2022 estimated the total Afghan population in the country at approximately 2.6 million.

At the same time, Iran has continued implementing strict policies regarding undocumented Afghan nationals.

According to the United Nations’ International Organization for Migration, approximately 1.5 million Afghan nationals were returned from Iran during 2025.

The latest tragedy underscores the risks associated with illegal migration as many Afghans continue undertaking dangerous journeys in search of safety and economic opportunities despite the growing dangers along the route.
