More than 150 millimetres of rain has flooded parts of Rawalpindi and Islamabad, inundating low-lying areas across the twin cities.
The heavy monsoon spell has also pushed water levels in Nullah Lai to dangerous levels. Consequently, authorities have issued warnings for residents living near the drain.
Heavy Rain Floods Low-Lying Areas
Several areas of Rawalpindi turned into ponds after hours of heavy rainfall. Meanwhile, floodwater entered multiple low-lying neighbourhoods across the city.
Nadeem Colony, Javed Colony, Muslim Colony and Aria Mohalla were among the affected areas. Water also accumulated around Liaquat Bagh and Committee Chowk Underpass.
Several parts of Murree Road and adjoining areas of Sadiqabad also experienced flooding. Similarly, Pirwadhai was inundated following the intense downpour.
The rainfall created difficult conditions for residents and commuters. Moreover, water accumulation disrupted movement across several roads and streets.
Nullah Lai Water Level Raises Alarm
According to the Water and Sanitation Agency (WASA) managing director, the Nullah Lai level reached around 20 feet at Kattarian.
Authorities subsequently sounded warning sirens in areas located along the drain. The water level at Gawalmandi Bridge also rose to around 17 feet.
Residents living along the banks of Nullah Lai have been directed to evacuate their homes. The precautionary measure aims to reduce risks as water levels remain high.
The situation has increased concerns in vulnerable neighbourhoods, particularly those located close to the drain. Therefore, residents have been urged to remain alert and follow official safety instructions.
More Rain Forecast Across Twin Cities
The Pakistan Meteorological Department has forecast additional rainfall across Rawalpindi and Islamabad during the next 24 hours.
The forecast comes as Punjab experiences the sixth spell of monsoon rains. Therefore, authorities expect further pressure on drainage systems in affected areas.
Meanwhile, Gujrat and Sialkot also continued to receive rainfall accompanied by thunder and lightning.
Authorities have urged residents in low-lying and vulnerable areas to exercise caution. They have also advised people to follow evacuation instructions whenever issued.
The continuing rainfall could further raise water levels in Nullah Lai. As a result, residents near vulnerable areas have been asked to stay prepared and remain updated about official warnings.
