KOHAT: Eleven people, including five police personnel, were martyred in an explosion at the Kohat Police Lines on Friday, officials said.
Television footage showed citizens gathered near a building with a collapsed wall while searching through rubble and helping injured people.
According to an initial handout from Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Inspector General Zulfiqar Hameed, the explosion occurred at a mosque inside the Kohat Police Lines. Initial reports suggested that an explosive-laden vehicle rammed into the building, causing the deadly explosion and significant structural damage.
However, Hameed later said security forces were exchanging fire with militants following the blast. The provincial police chief said preliminary information indicated that a suicide bomber detonated himself near the Special Branch building.
Meanwhile, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Chief Minister Sohail Afridi sought a detailed report on the incident and condemned the targeting of civilians.
He described the attack as deeply regrettable and unacceptable, according to a statement issued by his office.
Afridi directed authorities to ensure immediate medical treatment for those injured in the explosion.
He also said terrorist attacks could not weaken the nation’s resolve against militancy.
Furthermore, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Governor Faisal Karim Kundi condemned the explosion and prayed for the recovery of the injured.
Kundi said the entire nation stood with security forces in efforts to eliminate terrorism.
Rescue teams continued operations at the site while security personnel secured the Police Lines and surrounding areas.
Authorities are investigating the circumstances surrounding the explosion and the identity of those involved in the attack. Further details about the casualties and damage are expected as officials complete their assessment of the incident.
