The United Nations Security Council has strongly condemned the recent suicide bombing in Swat. The council described the attack as a “heinous and cowardly” act of terrorism. The bombing occurred outside a police station in Kabal on August 2. At least 16 Pakistani nationals, mostly civilians, lost their lives. Dozens of others also suffered injuries.
The Tehreek-i-Taliban Pakistan claimed responsibility for the attack. Following the incident, the UNSC expressed solidarity with Pakistan and offered condolences to the victims’ families.
UNSC Calls for Terrorism Perpetrators to Face Justice
In its statement, the council reaffirmed its opposition to terrorism in all forms. It also stressed the need to hold those responsible accountable.
“The members of the council underlined the need to hold perpetrators, organisers, financiers and sponsors of these reprehensible acts of terrorism accountable and bring them to justice.”
The council urged UN member states to cooperate with Pakistan under international law and relevant Security Council resolutions.
It also reiterated that “any acts of terrorism are criminal and unjustifiable, regardless of their motivation, wherever, whenever and by whomsoever committed”.
Furthermore, the UNSC stressed that countries must combat terrorism in line with the UN Charter and international law.
Pakistan Raises Concerns Over Afghan Sanctuaries
The condemnation followed Pakistan’s warning at a UNSC meeting about terrorist organisations operating from alleged sanctuaries inside Afghanistan.
Pakistan’s Permanent Representative to the UN, Ambassador Asim Iftikhar, said the country continues to face a serious threat from across its western border.
He identified the banned TTP, Balochistan Liberation Army and its Majeed Brigade among the groups Pakistan says maintain safe havens in Afghanistan. He also mentioned Islamic State Khorasan, East Turkistan Islamic Movement and Al Qaeda affiliates.
Pakistan urged the international community to prevent Afghan territory from becoming a launchpad for attacks against neighbouring states.
Pakistan and US Reaffirm Counterterrorism Cooperation
The developments also followed the fourth US-Pakistan Counterterrorism Dialogue in Washington.
Officials from both countries reaffirmed their commitment to fighting terrorist organisations. Meanwhile, Pakistan continues to seek stronger international cooperation against cross-border terrorism.
The UNSC’s latest statement highlights the need for collective action. It also reinforces calls for accountability and stronger measures against groups threatening regional and international security.
