Group says maritime embargo is immediate as regional security concerns intensify
DUBAI: Yemen’s Houthi movement announced on Monday that it was imposing a naval blockade against Saudi Arabia with immediate effect, marking a significant escalation in tensions after the collapse of a years-long period of relative calm between the two sides.
In a televised statement, the group’s military spokesperson declared a maritime embargo against what the Houthis described as the “criminal Saudi enemy,” saying the move was based on the principle of “an eye for an eye.”
The Houthis said the blockade was a response to what they described as Saudi Arabia’s prolonged blockade of Yemen’s ports and airports, accusing Riyadh of maintaining restrictions on the country by land, sea and air for nearly 12 years. Saudi authorities had not immediately responded to the announcement.
Renewed hostilities follow recent missile strikes
The declaration comes days after the Houthis claimed responsibility for missile attacks on Saudi Arabia, accusing the kingdom of carrying out air strikes on an airport under Houthi control. Saudi Arabia has not publicly commented on those allegations.
The reported missile attacks marked the first Houthi strikes against Saudi territory since an informal truce took effect in March 2022 following earlier attacks on Saudi energy infrastructure.
Meanwhile, regional security analysts are closely monitoring developments, warning that renewed hostilities could threaten maritime trade routes and increase instability across the Gulf and Red Sea region.

The Houthis did not immediately provide details on how the announced naval blockade would be enforced or identify specific shipping routes that could be affected.
The latest announcement follows continued concerns over security in the Red Sea and surrounding waterways, which remain vital corridors for global energy supplies and international trade.
