Governments and political leaders worldwide have reacted to the Democrats’ victory in the US midterm elections. The results could influence global trade, security, energy prices and international relations.
Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez described the outcome as a rejection of hatred, sexism and climate denial. He also suggested similar political changes could eventually reach Spain.
Meanwhile, Norwegian Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Stoere called the results a powerful signal of changing American political attitudes. He expressed hope for closer cooperation on climate policy, foreign affairs and development assistance.
South African President Cyril Ramaphosa also welcomed the outcome, describing it as the beginning of a new era in world relations.
European Leaders See Opportunities for Cooperation
European Parliament Vice President Christel Schaldemose said the Democratic victory could strengthen support for Ukraine and environmental initiatives. However, she stressed that Europe must continue building its strategic independence.
Greek government spokesperson Pavlos Marinakis maintained that relations between Greece and the United States would remain strong. He said the countries’ strategic partnership and major agreements would continue despite the election results.
Japan also reaffirmed its commitment to Washington, describing the bilateral alliance as central to its foreign and security policies. Japanese officials stressed that cooperation remained essential amid growing international uncertainty.
Russia Maintains Its Existing Foreign Policy Position
Russia adopted a more cautious response to the Democratic victory. Deputy Foreign Minister Sergei Ryabkov said Washington’s Democratic leadership remained critical of Moscow.
He added that Russia’s approach to Ukraine and broader foreign policy would not change because of political developments abroad. Moscow would continue following its established policies, he said.
The reactions reflect differing international expectations about the election’s consequences. While some leaders anticipate closer cooperation on climate and security, others expect existing tensions to continue.
The Democratic victory could also reshape debates over trade, energy costs and international security. However, the practical impact will depend on decisions made by the new Congress and the administration.
