Thousands of New York Knicks fans flooded Manhattan streets after their team’s historic NBA Finals victory on Saturday night.
The celebrations quickly turned chaotic as fireworks, smoke grenades, and vandalism erupted across Midtown Manhattan. Authorities also reported that a 17-year-old suffered a gunshot wound to the foot during the celebrations in Times Square.
World Cup Shuttle Bus Set on Fire
According to police, three persons of interest were taken into custody following the shooting. Meanwhile, large crowds surrounded nearly 15 World Cup shuttle buses transporting fans from the Brazil-Morocco football match.
Several people climbed onto the buses and entered their cabins during the disorder. Moreover, one yellow school bus hired for the FIFA World Cup shuttle service was set on fire.ย
At least three additional shuttle buses sustained significant damage during the unrest. Fortunately, officials did not immediately report injuries linked to the burning bus.
Police Restore Order After Hours of Chaos
As celebrations continued, police blocked several streets around Times Square and Madison Square Garden. After waiting for nearly two hours, officers in riot gear dispersed crowds and chased fans through nearby streets. Mounted police also helped clear roads occupied by celebrating supporters.ย
Elsewhere, fans waved flags, beat drums, climbed traffic lights, and celebrated the Knicks’ first NBA title since 1973. Many lifelong supporters described the championship as a once-in-a-lifetime moment after decades of waiting.
