Construction Crew Stunned After Finding Gold Beneath Building Foundation
A group of construction workers in Belgium made an extraordinary discovery while replacing a sewer line, reportedly uncovering gold coins and nuggets worth around $14 million, equivalent to more than Rs2.5 billion.
The discovery was made in Sint-Gillis-Dendermonde during renovation work on a building.
Workers were removing part of the buildingโs foundation to install new sewer pipes when they noticed several shiny objects beneath the ground.
At first, the crew reportedly assumed the objects were ordinary one-euro coins.
However, after examining them more closely, they realised they had uncovered gold.
The workers continued digging and found additional coins along with gold nuggets hidden beneath the building.
Mario, the manager supervising the construction team, described the discovery as an unforgettable moment.
He said he picked up one of the objects after noticing its unusual appearance and quickly realised it was gold.
The team then searched the surrounding area and discovered more valuable items.
Mario said he had worked in construction for 33 years but had never experienced anything similar.
Treasure Reportedly Valued at Around $14 Million
An 18-year-old student working with the construction crew said the workers initially struggled to believe what they had found.
Discovering a major gold treasure was the last thing they expected while carrying out routine sewer work.
The collection was later assessed and reportedly valued at approximately $14 million.
That would place its value at more than Rs2.5 billion when converted into Pakistani currency.
Despite making the discovery, the workers were not allowed to simply take the treasure home.
The gold was handed over to police after authorities were informed.
According to the report, the recovered treasure is currently being held by a charitable organisation while authorities attempt to determine its legal ownership.
The circumstances surrounding how the gold came to be hidden beneath the building remain unclear.
Mystery Surrounds Original Owner of Hidden Gold
Authorities have not yet established who originally owned the treasure.
The building where the gold was discovered was reportedly once owned by a wealthy family, raising speculation that the valuables may have belonged to former occupants.
However, no confirmed link between the previous owners and the gold has yet been established.
Investigators may now examine the history of the property and available ownership records to determine whether anyone has a legitimate claim.
According to the report, Belgian law allows an original owner to come forward and claim such discovered property within a five-year period.
If no legitimate owner establishes a claim during that time, the treasure could eventually be divided between the person who discovered it and the owner of the property, subject to applicable legal procedures.
For the construction workers, the discovery turned an ordinary sewer replacement project into a potentially life-changing event.
What began with a few shining objects beneath a foundation eventually revealed a treasure reportedly worth millions of dollars.
The final ownership of the gold, however, will depend on whether its original owner can be identified and on the outcome of the legal process in Belgium.
