Several women allegedly affected by a mobile phone theft case in Karachi beat the accused during his court appearance on Tuesday.
Police brought the suspect, identified as Babar alias Sahil Salman, before a judicial magistrate in Malir. The women gathered at the court premises and confronted him as officers escorted him.
Videos circulating on social media showed the women slapping the suspect and hitting him with slippers. Police personnel intervened and moved him away from the crowd.
The court later granted police one-day physical remand to continue the investigation and recover the remaining mobile phones.
Job Offers Allegedly Used to Lure Women
The case dates back to October 1, when dozens of women were allegedly invited to a farmhouse in Karachi’s Gadap area under the pretext of job interviews.
According to police, the women were promised employment opportunities and daily payments. The organisers allegedly transported them to the farmhouse in buses.
Once they arrived, the event organiser reportedly collected their mobile phones, claiming the devices could disturb the gathering. He then allegedly fled with the phones.
Police said the incident involved 59 women. Investigators believe the suspect used job advertisements and a WhatsApp group to attract applicants.
Police Recover 40 Mobile Phones
Malir police arrested the main suspect on Monday while he was allegedly attempting to sell the stolen phones.
According to police officials, officers recovered 40 mobile phones from his possession. However, 19 devices remained missing, and investigators suspected another individual had them. Police have also arrested other suspects allegedly linked to the incident. Investigators are working to recover the remaining phones and establish each suspect’s role.
A case was registered at Gadap City police station under sections of the Pakistan Penal Code relating to theft, cheating and common intention.
The investigation continues as authorities pursue the outstanding devices and other individuals allegedly involved in the case.
