India has agreed in principle to participate in the 2027 South Asian Federation (SAF) Games in Pakistan. The event will take place from April 4 to 11.
Pakistan Olympic Association (POA) Secretary General Khalid Mehmood confirmed India’s participation after a regional Olympic meeting. He said India accepted Pakistan’s invitation at the relevant sporting level.
However, details about India’s contingent are expected in January 2027.
Meanwhile, Pakistan has accelerated preparations for the regional multi-sport event. Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar chaired a meeting to review arrangements.
Officials discussed venues, security, transportation, accommodation and medical facilities. The government also stressed coordination between federal and provincial authorities.
Islamabad, Lahore and Peshawar to Host Events
The 2027 SAF Games will feature competitions across 28 sports. Islamabad will host 15 sports, including squash, tennis and martial arts.
Lahore will stage 10 sports, including swimming, cricket and hockey. Peshawar will host three sports, giving Khyber Pakhtunkhwa a direct role.
Security remains a major priority because thousands of athletes and officials are expected. Authorities have been directed to provide foolproof security throughout the event.
Pakistan last hosted the SAF Games in Islamabad in 2004. Therefore, the 2027 edition will mark its return after 23 years.
The event could also boost tourism and hospitality businesses across the three host cities. Pakistani athletes will additionally benefit from competing before home supporters.
The success of the games will depend on coordination among government departments, sports bodies, security agencies and local administrations.
