PTI lawmakers arrived at the Sindh Assembly on donkey carts, turning their protest against rising fuel prices into a striking demonstration.
Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) MPA Sajjad Ali Soomro led the protest as party members travelled towards the assembly’s main entrance. They rode donkey carts from an area near the assembly while carrying placards and chanting slogans against higher petroleum prices.
PTI lawmakers protest rising fuel prices
The unusual demonstration aimed to highlight the difficulties faced by ordinary citizens because of increasingly expensive fuel. Soomro said petrol had become so costly that lawmakers could no longer afford to travel to the assembly in their vehicles.
The protesters therefore demanded that the federal government withdraw the recent increase in petroleum prices. They also called for measures that could provide relief to consumers facing higher fuel costs.
The protest comes as concerns over petroleum prices continue to grow. Meanwhile, the Sindh Assembly has already taken steps to raise the issue with the federal government.
Sindh Assembly seeks relief over petroleum levy
Earlier, the Sindh Assembly unanimously adopted a resolution calling on the federal government to abolish the petroleum levy. Jamaat-e-Islami lawmaker Muhammad Farooq moved the resolution, which urged relief for consumers amid rising inflation.
However, Sindh Law and Parliamentary Affairs Minister Ziaul Hasan Lanjar said the matter falls under the federal government’s jurisdiction. He maintained that the provincial government does not have the authority to abolish the federal levy.
The assembly has also adopted another resolution addressing frequent increases in petroleum prices. The resolution called for an end to daily increases and demanded greater stability in petroleum prices for consumers.
Fuel prices remain a political concern
Against this backdrop, the PTI lawmakers used their journey to the Sindh Assembly to draw attention to fuel costs. Their donkey-cart protest provided a visual representation of their argument over the affordability of petrol.
The demonstration also comes after repeated calls within the provincial assembly for relief from petroleum-related costs. Therefore, the issue continues to remain a prominent concern during recent assembly proceedings.
As the debate continues, PTI lawmakers have demanded that the federal government reconsider the latest fuel price increase. They have also urged authorities to take steps that can reduce the burden on consumers.
